Chapter 10

CATO

I wasn’t sure what to make of Rolayna’s response to our discussion about her sister. But after she returned from the bathroom, things became tense and uncomfortable. Certainly not what I’d been hoping for in the way of a dinner date with her.

I watched the headlights going down the highway as she drove us home. If my stomach had a face, I knew it would be wearing a Cheshire grin. The steak dinner was perhaps the best meal I’d had in a few decades.

But as tasty as the meal was, I now had a sour stomach after our conversation. Being stuck inside a circus book meant some of my conversational skills might be lacking. I was afraid if I tried to draw her out, I might drive an even greater wedge between us.

We pulled into her driveaway and I started to open the door, but she cleared her throat as if she wanted my attention. I stopped and glanced in her direction. She raised one hand, scratched her cheek, then rubbed her thumb across her lower lip.

I wanted to take those fingers in mine, sandwich them between my hands then kiss the heel of her palm. I wanted to run my tongue across her lips to taste them. There were so many things I wanted.

Instead I swallowed and averted my eyes to stare towards the front so that I wouldn’t make that mistake. Since the day I was bound to the book I’d failed as an imprisoned genie. Not that it was particularly an aspiration of mine to be a good one, but it only made my time of incarceration that much harder because I refused to follow the rules.

The rules weren’t what held me back now. I liked Rolayna. And I didn’t want to screw up the time we had together.

“Sorry about tonight,” she finally spoke. I heard her take a deep breath, then exhale slowly, “See why I’m a homebody? I’m not very good company.”

My fingers twitched, still urging me to touch her. I balled my hand into a fist, “You have always been very good company, Rolayna. But then as we both know, I haven’t had much practice with dinner conversation. Let’s forget tonight and go back to the way we have been.”

Although I still wasn’t looking directly at her, I saw her head moved in acknowledgment from the corner of my eye. Feeling somewhat relieved, I grabbed the door handle and exited the car. Before she could pull her door open entirely, I hurried around to her side and held it for her.

Her sheepish smile was endearing and if there had been more light I knew I could have seen the little freckles across her cheek brighten with a little blush. She struggled for her keys as I followed her to the house. After a few moments she had to door open and we both walked inside.

I presumed she would want to retire to some place alone, so I veered off to the living room intending to reenter the book.
